Ingredient spotlight: Green tea extract

People in India, China, Thailand and Japan have been drinking green tea and using it in medicine throughout history. Green tea has been used as an astringent to help heal wounds, a diuretic to promote the excretion of urine, a regulator of body temperature and blood sugar, and an aid to promote digestion.

In skincare and beauty products, green tea extract is a potent anti-inflammatory ingredient, helping to reduce redness in people with sensitive skin and skin conditions like dandruff, rosacea and psoriasis.

One study showed that green tea improved skin elasticity, which in turn, minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Green tea has anti-bacterial properties, too, which can be useful for those with acne.

Of course, drinking green tea is also beneficial to your skin and your entire body. Scientists believe that the power antioxidants in green tea – polyphenols – can help combat the free radicals that cause aging and illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Green tea may also enhance the skin’s ability to block UV rays and harmful enzymes. A 2007 study showed that people who drank two or more cups a day had a 65 percent lower risk of developing one form of skin cancer.

BodyVerde uses green tea extract in a variety of ways. The green tea in Fresh Skin Rx helps treat itchy skin conditions and rashes. In EZ Waterless Shave, green tea makes for a non-irritating, skin-soothing shave. And in Pore Tight, our all-natural pore minimizing lotion, green tea feeds skin antioxidants and combines with berry extracts to tone and tighten the skin.
