Rashes, itches and sun spots be gone

Summer exposure to sun, heat and other elements – pool chemicals, insects and allergens – can leave you itchy, rashy and red.

We’re always looking for natural skincare products and home remedies. Here are a few that can help with your summer skin problems.

Heat rash. You’ll know you have it when tiny, red and often itchy bumps appear on your chest, back, neck, stomach or groin area. (It’s also known as “prickly heat” or miliaria.) Heat rash occurs when skin pores become clogged with sweat, which is why wearing loose-fitting clothing can help prevent it. If it happens, sit in a cool bath with baking soda, apply aloe gel directly from the plant, or gently dust the skin with cornstarch. Drinking a cooling herbal tea may also help.

Freckles. Some people are just naturally prone to freckles – embrace them! However, there is a difference between these natural freckles (ephelides) and sun spots (lentigines). The latter are usually darker and larger than regular freckles, may be irregularly shaped, and usually don’t fade during the winter. To prevent the appearance of freckles and age spots, there really is no substitute for limiting sun exposure, using sunscreen all the time, and wearing a hat to shield the face. To help lighten them naturally, Livestrong.com recommends applying eggplant to the skin. Another home remedy is to apply Vitamin C – the kind that comes from real lemons.

Insect bites. Mosquitoes, gnats, flies and bees can leave bumps and welts on the skin that can only get worse with itching. Consider investing in a “mosquito magnet” device for keeping them away in the back yard. Mother Earth News reminds us to wear light-colored clothing and to plant rosemary, basil, catnip, lemon balm and rose geraniums in the yard as natural repellants. To take the sting out of bites, use our Miracle Skin Renew Serum. Our customers have found literally hundreds of uses for this product – it’s worth keeping one in every vehicle, purse and backpack. Apply a drop or two at a time for relief and faster healing.
